Product Identification
• Generic Name: Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride Tablets
• Strength: 250 mg Oxytetracycline per tablet
• Package: 10 tablets per blister
Composition
Each tablet contains 250 mg Oxytetracycline (as hydrochloride salt) as active ingredient. Excipients: Corn starch, lactose, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, film coating premix.
Description
Light yellow film-coated tablets; yellow core.
Pharmacological Action
Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic tetracycline antibiotic. It reversibly binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibits aminoacyl-tRNA binding and blocks bacterial protein synthesis. At high concentrations, it exhibits bactericidal effect.
• Spectrum: Active against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Spirochetes, Actinomyces and some protozoa.
• Pharmacokinetics: Readily absorbed orally; widely distributed in body tissues and fluids; partially metabolized in liver; excreted via glomerular filtration and bile.
Indications
For the treatment of susceptible bacterial, mycoplasmal and rickettsial infections in cattle, sheep, swine and poultry:
1. Respiratory tract infections: pneumonia, bronchitis, enzootic pneumonia, avian mycoplasmosis
2. Gastrointestinal infections: bacterial enteritis, colibacillosis, salmonellosis
3. Urogenital infections, mastitis, metritis, anthrax
4. Tick-borne diseases, eperythrozoonosis, chlamydial infections
Dosage & Administration
For oral administration, calculated as oxytetracycline base.
• Cattle, Sheep & Swine: 10–20 mg per kg body weight, 2–3 times daily for 3–5 consecutive days.
• Poultry: 20–40 mg per kg body weight, 2 times daily for 3–5 consecutive days.
Adverse Reactions
1. Gastrointestinal disturbances: anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal flora imbalance.
2. Long-term use may cause dental discoloration and enamel hypoplasia in young animals.
3. Rare hepatotoxicity and photosensitivity reactions.
4. Overgrowth of resistant bacteria or fungi with prolonged use.
Contraindications
1. Hypersensitivity to tetracycline antibiotics.
2. Contraindicated in laying hens during egg production period.
3. Avoid use in late pregnancy and young animals during tooth development.
Precautions
1. Do not administer with dairy products, calcium, magnesium, iron or aluminum supplements (reduces absorption).
2. Use with caution in animals with hepatic or renal impairment.
3. For veterinary use only. Keep out of reach of children.
Withdrawal Period
• Meat: Cattle 5 days; Sheep 7 days; Swine 5 days; Chicken 5 days
• Milk: 3 days
Storage
Store in tightly sealed blister, protected from light and moisture, below 25°C.
