Pharmacological Action
Ivermectin is a semi-synthetic macrocyclic lactone endectocide. It potentiates glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in nerve and muscle cells of nematodes and arthropods, increasing chloride influx, inducing cell hyperpolarization and flaccid paralysis, which leads to parasite death or expulsion.
• Spectrum: Highly effective against gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms and larval nematodes in ruminants and swine, including Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, Dictyocaulus. It also kills ectoparasites such as mange mites, lice, ticks and warble fly larvae. It is not active against tapeworms or flukes.
• Pharmacokinetics: Well absorbed orally; widely distributed and concentrated in adipose tissue; metabolized in the liver; primarily excreted via feces with a long elimination half-life.
Indications
For the treatment and control of internal nematode infections and external parasitic infestations in cattle, sheep, goats and swine.
Dosage & Administration
For oral administration.
• Cattle, Sheep & Goats: 0.2 mg ivermectin per kg body weight, single administration.
• Swine: 0.3 mg ivermectin per kg body weight, single administration. For severe mange infestation, repeat the dose after 7–10 days.
Adverse Reactions
1. Transient exacerbation of pruritus may occur in animals with heavy mange infestation.
2. Overdose may cause neurotoxic symptoms: ataxia, mydriasis, lethargy, salivation and recumbency.
3. Rare hypersensitivity reactions in individual animals.
Contraindications
1. Hypersensitivity to ivermectin or other macrocyclic lactones.
2. Not for use in lactating dairy cows producing milk for human consumption.
Precautions
1. Strictly follow the recommended dosage; overdose may induce neurotoxicity.
2. Use with caution in young, debilitated or pregnant animals.
3. Do not administer to collie breeds and related herding dogs with MDR1 gene mutation.
